Investigation Of The Out-patient's Waiting Time For Medical Treatment

Abstract
|
|
|
Objectives : This investigation was performed to shorten the out-patient's waiting time for medical
treatment.
Materials & Methods : The data were collected from patients who visited out patient clinics at June
21(monday), 23(Wednesday), 25(Friday), 1999. The out-patient's waiting time for medical treatment was
calculated by subtracting prescription time from the reservation time or reception time.
Results :
1) Comparing to 45 minutes of last spring. April 6, Monday 1998, the waiting time for out-patient medical
treatment was shortened to 34 minutes at June 21, Monday, 1999.
2) In case of registered patients, the average waiting time was 16 minutes, which is similar to 17 minutes
- the result of '97 hospital service evaluation.
3) However, this investigation showed that approximately 47% of registered patients waited more than 20
minutes.
4) Distribution of out-patient clinic visit was highest in Monday morning, especially 09:00-11:00 AM for
both registered and non-registered patients.
Conclusion and Suggestions : Although the waiting time for out-patient medical treatment was shortened
compared to last year, about half of registered patients were turned out to wait for more than 20 minutes.
Therefore, we conclude that the hospital should keep making an effort to shorten the waiting time for
medical treatment and recommend the following plans: 1) Let's avoid making an reservation for patient in
Monday morning as possible as we can. 2) For the patients with chronic diseases who visit regularly and
do not have clinical test performed in the morning, let's make an reservation in the afternoon, 15:00-16:00
except Monday afternoon. 3) Let's keep strictly the starting time of out-patient clinic, and 4) Let's
educate patient to keep reservation time and make a reservation at the convenient time for patients.
